| | The Glasgow School of Art Fashion Show - "one the most eagerly anticipated events on Glasgow's style calendar." (The Evening Times)
The GSA Fashion Show has been a spectacular annual event since the 1940s. It attracts significant media attention and is "recognized across Europe as one of the most innovative showcases of new talent." (The Herald). The unique collections presented by undergraduate textile students confirm Glasgow's position as a thriving style capital.
The 2007 show will take place on the 13th and 14th March 2007, at the Vic, Glasgow School of Art.
We are sponsoring the event by featuring some of the Third Year students below. |
| | Alan Moore was accepted to Glasgow School of Art straight from school, with the same folio that received a "no award" from the SQA. "I have already had two, collaborative exhibitions with 1030 group and planning another later this year. I have also been part of the "cutting edge design" project, for clients in Milan and London. I am interested in comics and tattoos, which usually have an influence on my embroidery. I would describe my collection as Retro Futuristic, with lots of solid colours and bold images. It was influenced by old car engines and beautiful car exteriors.

Trash into treasure....
"I've taken the old trashy rags and by manipulating and combining them with my own woven material I've turned them into catwalk treasures. My woven material is a mix of silks and viscose to add to the luxurious feel to my collection."
Achievements include: winner of best use of material in the Coke-a-Cola "Form and Fusion" design awards. Winner of the Channel Four national competition "Self Portrait UK".

"The Foundation Course at Leith School of Art provided me with a fantastic opportunity to experiment in a range of disciplines. My interest in materials then led me to apply to Textiles at Glasgow School of Art where I was offered a place into 2nd year. Studies are rarely limited to textiles; I am also constantly exploring possibilities in glass, kinetic art, environmental sculpture, performance and drawing. A two month placement at Dovecot Studies allowed me to further my studies in the history of textiles whilst learning the art of tapestry weaving with the studio's master weavers.
My collection reflects my method of working; trying to work intuitively to maintain a fresh quality. I have drawn on connections made whilst working -Peruvian textiles, the work of Paolozzi, traditional forms in Japanese costume- which help development of the original source of inspiration, a chunky patterned jumper.
I am currently exploring options in theatre, film and television where I hope to further my work after college. I have a particular interest in the potential relationships between costume, choreography and stage design."

Ripped Rag Revitalised...
"I have taken previously uninspiring high street clothing and transformed them into one off catwalk pieces. Men's suit trousers are redesigned into tailored tops and everyday shirts are deconstructed and then recreated into dresses. I have shredded the rag into strips and then re-knitted it, reinventing it as figure hugging revitalised clothing. I have, therefore, reversed the order of typical dress."

| | Kristina McCormick is 20 years old and from Ballymena in Northern Ireland. Studying embroidery at Glasgow School of Art, her previous work experience includes S. Wauchob in Paris, Timorous Beasties and Centre for Advanced Textiles, both in Glasgow. She wishes to continue her studies on Central St Martins Master's course after she finishes her degree and then plans to set up her own business. Collection:
Kristina's collection themes around Sustainability. "I used found men's suit jackets, shirts and jumpers and cut into them, creating visually interesting pieces for women using fabrics such as pvc and leather. I enjoy the techniques of embellishment with eyelets and studs as well as appliqué. Also enjoy letting the clothes make the shapes and patterns on the body through layering and construction."

"After receiving the Design Student of the Year Award at Leith School of Art I went on to commence my Textile Degree at Glasgow School of Art, where I have chosen to specialise in embroidery.
My collection for this year's Fashion Show has a bright and colourful energy about it; it's a mish mash of heavily worked stitch and pattern. With the puffed sleeves and high waists, there is a slight essence of eighties power dressing creeping in. This thread of colourful energy and my eclectic approach reappears in many aspects of my work. This is definitely true of my knitted handbags and costume jewellery which I have been successfully selling in a local boutique and through mail order for the past year.
After graduating my intention is to open my own shop where I can experiment, unrestricted, with all my creative ideas. The confidence gained from knowing there is interest in my products has added excitement and anticipation to my career plans. I struggle to narrow my interests down to any one specialism as I have ideas for jewellery, fashion, interiors and even textiles as art and having my own shop would mean I could embrace them all.

| | Sophie Charles is currently studying woven textile design. Her fabrics are all hand woven using a mixture of synthetic and natural yarns, ranging from silk to viscose. "Using stripes of clashing colours together, with flashes of polyneon yellow thread I have produced a collection of modern fabrics intended for fashion. I have also worked with donated clothes to create voluminous garments, which set against the bold stripes of my weave produces a modern yet sophisticated feel to my collection. My collection plays about with 'clashing' colours, mixing soft hues with sharp, vivid colours in way that they compliment each other. My plans for after art school are still undecided but I will most likely try and get into the fashion side of textiles. I would like to either move to Paris or London to do a Masters degree or work with an established fashion or textile designer."

| | Mariam Waqas Syed "Studying Textile Design at one of the leading arts schools in Scotland has not only advanced my skills but encouraged me to plan and develop my design concepts. The Scottish environment is fascinating for young designers like me to blend culture and art with design. My passion is to experiment with different weave structures, patterns and colours to create balance in design. I am the proud winner of the 'Natasha Marshall' award (2007)."
Mariam's collection consists of short square jackets with a bold pattern in hues of grey set on a white warp. To complement the jackets, she has draped large curtains to make skirts. After graduating from College she intends to work as a Textile Designer.

| | Andy Robertson left Williamwood High School in 2004 having failed his Art exams, but gained entry to the Glasgow School of Art at the age of seventeen, where he now specialises in weave. "I have taken designs to Milan and London through a project based in Scotland called "Cutting Edge" designs. I have also participated in various exhibitions in my home city of Glasgow as part of the 1030 group. In my latest project, GSA Fashion Show, I constructed fabric from shreds of second hand t-shirts. The idea of sustainable/ethical textiles is something I constantly strive towards.
